Vadodara

Gujarat government has given approval to Rs. 45 crore project of development of new water body near Adiran village of Waghodia belt in central Gujarat. The development work of this water body has been assigned to irrigation department, Government of Gujarat. This water body will be able to store overflowing water of Ajwa reservoir. It will create a new source of water for Vadodara city.

Site for the proposed water body is located 23 km away from Vadodara city in 60 ha wasteland. Vadodara Municipal Corporation had sent a proposal regarding this project to state government. The cost of the projected has been estimated at around Rs. 45 crore. The state government has approved the project on Holi.

Vadodara has population of around 19 lakh. It is supplied water through Ajwa sarovar, Mahisagar and Koyli-Khanpur plant of Narmada water. The city however faces problem of drinking water every summer. Vadodara Municipal Corporation was looking for a new project to create another source of water. Finally it was decided to develop a new water body over 60 ha wasteland owned by the state government at a cost of Rs. 45 crore.

The project will pass through survey, feasibility report, design and storage estimates, connectivity options and tender process. As Vadodara Municipal Corporation has no experience of developing a new water body, the state government has assigned the project to Gujarat Water Supply and Sewage Board.

It should be mentioned that Ajwa reservoir is connected to feeder canal. Surplus water of Ajwa goes to feeder canal, but when feeder canal itself overflows, the water goes to Vishwamitri river. A new water body will be developed in 10 km distance of Ajwa reservoir. It will be connected to feeder canal located at 500 km distance. Gravity line of proposed water body will be extended to Vadodara.
