MP govt plans to partner with Jamnagar’s Vantara for tiger gene mapping

Jamnagar: The Madhya Pradesh government plans to collaborate with the Vantara Wildlife Rescue Centre in Jamnagar, Gujarat, to carry out gene mapping of wild tigers in the state. As per reports, the state is likely to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Anant Ambani-run rescue centre to take the project forward.

A high-level delegation from Madhya Pradesh recently visited the Vantara facility to review its conservation initiatives. The centre serves as a hub for the rescue, rehabilitation, and care of various endangered species, the official added, speaking on condition of anonymity.

According to officials, gene mapping will significantly boost tiger conservation efforts. By building a diverse gene pool, the state hopes to increase the adaptability and resilience of its tiger population. Gene mapping will also help identify tigers that migrate to neighbouring states and mate with females from different genetic backgrounds, strengthening overall genetic diversity.

Additionally, the process could help authorities track and identify tigers involved in human-wildlife conflicts, allowing for quicker and more targeted interventions.

The collaboration will also see the Vantara Centre’s research team share its expertise in gene mapping techniques with Madhya Pradesh’s forest department once the MoU is formalised. DeshGujarat
