PM Modi becomes India’s 2nd longest-serving Prime Minister; overtakes Indira Gandhi
July 25, 2025
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday completed 4,078 consecutive days in office, surpassing the record previously held by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who served for 4,077 uninterrupted days from January 24, 1966, to March 24, 1977. This marks the second longest single, continuous tenure by any Prime Minister after India’s first PM, Jawaharlal Nehru.
With this, Modi becomes India’s second longest-serving Prime Minister in a single stretch, behind only Nehru. As of July 25, 2025, when he reaches this landmark, PM Modi also holds several unique distinctions.
He remains the only Prime Minister born after Independence, the longest-serving non-Congress PM, and the longest-serving PM from a non-Hindi-speaking state. Additionally, Modi is the only non-Congress leader to have completed two full terms and to be re-elected twice with a parliamentary majority, making him the first non-Congress Prime Minister to secure an outright Lok Sabha majority.
Remarkably, he is also the first sitting Prime Minister since Indira Gandhi in 1971 to return to power with a full majority. Alongside Nehru, PM Modi is one of only two Prime Ministers to lead their parties to three consecutive Lok Sabha victories.
Now, counting both his time as Gujarat Chief Minister and as Prime Minister, Modi has won six consecutive elections as party leader: three in Gujarat (2002, 2007, 2012) and three national polls (2014, 2019, 2024). This reflects nearly 24 years of continuous leadership in democratically elected office, at either the state or national level.
Born into a modest family in Vadnagar, Gujarat, Modi’s early life included helping his father sell tea at a railway station. Rising through the ranks of the RSS and BJP, he became known for his grassroots appeal and distinctive communication style. His decade-long tenure as Gujarat’s Chief Minister paved the way for his historic national victory in 2014. Since then, he has positioned himself as an influential global leader, promoting India as an assertive and confident force on the world stage. DeshGujarat
