Tar balls spotted on Nargol, Umargam beaches; GPCB begins probe

Valsad: Traces of an oil spill, appearing as tar balls, have been reported along the beaches of Nargol and Umargam in Valsad district. While the exact source of the spill is still unknown, a team from the Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) visited the affected sites and collected samples for testing.

The issue came to light on Sunday morning when locals noticed a black layer spread across the beaches and notified the authorities. Multiple GPCB teams have since been dispatched to beaches across Valsad for further investigation. A team from the Valsad division of GPCB also visited Nargol on Monday to collect additional samples.

It is noteworthy that when oil comes into contact with sand, it often solidifies into tar balls, which emit a pungent smell and are difficult to clean.

However, local villagers and the Gram Panchayat have taken it upon themselves to begin beach cleaning operations, especially since the area attracts a large number of tourists. Locals also claimed that, despite informing authorities about the tar balls, no action was taken. As a result, they decided to clean the beach themselves.

Umargam beach is not just a popular tourist destination but also a favored location for film shoots and pre-wedding photography. However, the current condition of the beach has raised concerns about tourism and environmental safety. DeshGujarat
