Gujarat govt to set up separate Cyber Crime unit amid rising online frauds
August 12, 2025
Gandhinagar: With cybercrime incidents on the rise in Gujarat, the state government has decided to establish a dedicated Cyber Crime Unit, similar to the Gujarat ATS and State Monitoring Cell. Aimed at curbing the menace of online fraud, the new unit will be headed by officers of IG and DIG rank.
A separate building for the Cyber Crime Unit, similar to the Police Bhavan in Gandhinagar, will be constructed. The unit will also have a strong operational team, including around five SPs, eight DYSPs, and 15 PIs.
The facility will be equipped with state-of-the-art technology and will also offer certain services to private companies on a paid basis. To manage its finances, a separate body or corporation is also planned.
Notably, cybercrime complaints in Gujarat have seen a sharp rise in recent months. Fraudsters are adopting new tactics such as online link scams, “digital arrests,” and fake audio-video calls to extort money from citizens.
Until now, cybercrime cases were handled by the cyber cells of district police. However, like the State Monitoring Cell that mainly oversees prohibition-related crimes, the state-level Cyber Crime Unit will have jurisdiction over online crimes across Gujarat. DeshGujarat
