Amit Shah Becomes India’s Longest – Serving Union Home Minister

New Delhi: Amit Shah has become the longest – serving union minister of Home affairs of India. He has completed 2,258 days (6 years 65 days) as country’s Home Minister, surpassing the 2,256 days (6 years 64 days) tenure record of former Home Minister Lal Krishna Advani which was the highest previously.

Nation’s first Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel served as country Home Minister for 1,218 days. He was also Deputy Prime Minister.  Among non-BJP Home Ministers, Govind Ballabh Pant had highest tenure of 6 years 56 days.  BJP’s Rajnath Singh had been on this post for 5 years 3 days.

Shah became country’s Home minister on 31st May 2019 and remained on the post till 9th June 2024. He again became Home Minister on 10th June 2024 and he is continuing. Apart from Home ministry, he also is country’s first Cooperation minister. Shah had been Home Minister of Gujarat State also in the past. He also held the post of national president of ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
