Surat to get two more iconic roads under ₹61 crore PPP project

Surat: In a significant move to boost urban infrastructure and beautify the cityscape, the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has decided to redevelop two prominent road stretches as iconic roads. As part of the Smart City project, the stretch from Surat International Airport gate to Kuvada Junction on Dumas Road and the stretch from Y Junction to Sosyo Circle on Udhna-Magdalla Road will undergo major upgrades.

The 2 km airport stretch (60 metres wide) will be developed across approximately 40,000 sq m, while the 7.7 km Y Junction–Sosyo Circle stretch, also 60 metres wide, will cover around 112,000 sq m. The proposals and bids submitted by contractor Rajhans Infracon were approved on Thursday in the Standing Committee meeting. The roads will be developed under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, with a total estimated investment of ₹61 crore—₹21 crore by the civic body and ₹40 crore by the contractor.

The redeveloped roads will feature public attractions such as food stalls, selfie zones, and activity areas beneath flyovers. As part of the initiative, the SMC will build the core infrastructure, including paved pathways, railings, lighting poles, and zebra crossings. The contractor will be responsible for beautification elements like sculptures, modern-design bus stops, decorative traffic islands, selfie points, water fountains, and recreational zones under flyovers.

Rajhans Infracon—the same firm that developed Surat’s existing iconic Airport Road—will undertake both projects. The SMC had earlier planned seven such iconic roads, and work on these two will begin soon. DeshGujarat
