Centre approves ₹575 crore upgrade for Dholavira – Santalpur highway

Kutch: The iconic ‘Road to Heaven’ in Kutch is set to receive a major infrastructure boost, as the central government has approved the upgradation of a 106.10 km stretch of National Highway-754K from Dholavira to Santalpur into a 2-lane road with paved shoulders. The project has been sanctioned at a cost of ₹575.07 crore.

Spanning 30 kilometers along the national highway from Ghaduli to Santalpur, the ‘Road to Heaven’ offers a captivating drive through the white desert, connecting Khavda to Dholavira and crossing the scenic Rann of Kutch Lake.

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, announced the decision on social media platform X, stating, “Upgradation of the 106.10 km section of National Highway-754K from Dholavira to Santalpur in Gujarat to 2-lane with paved shoulder standard has been approved at a cost of ₹575.07 crore. This section forms an important strategic link connecting the Rann of Kutch. The project will improve connectivity between the remote and arid areas of Kutch and the rest of Gujarat, integrating it with National Highway-27 (East-West Corridor).”

Gadkari also noted that the project is expected to significantly boost tourism in the Kutch region, particularly to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Dholavira. It will also serve as a vital corridor for the region’s prominent mineral and salt industries.

The existing road is congested and prone to frequent accidents. Upgrading it to a 2-lane road with paved shoulders will ease traffic, improve road safety, and reduce vehicle operating costs—resulting in a better travel experience and improved mileage. DeshGujarat
