Air India AI-171 Crash: Bodies of 260 Victims Handed Over to Families

Ahmedabad: Health Minister Rushikesh Patel has announced that the DNA matching process for all passengers and crew members involved in the June 12, 2025, plane crash in Ahmedabad has been completed. The mortal remains of all 241 deceased passengers and crew have been respectfully handed over to their families.

In total, 260 deceased individuals have been identified in connection with the crash—254 through DNA testing and 6 through facial identification. All have been handed over to their respective families.

The Minister expressed his gratitude to everyone involved in the response efforts, including health workers, police personnel, the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) teams, and volunteers. He commended their swift and coordinated efforts, stating that the DNA identification and handover process was completed efficiently due to seamless interdepartmental collaboration.

Providing further details, the Minister said the 260 identified deceased include 181 Indian nationals, 7 Portuguese citizens, 52 British citizens, 1 Canadian, and 19 non-passengers. Of the 260 bodies, 31 were transported by air and 229 by road.

He added that DNA samples of 254 deceased have been matched—241 of them were passengers and 13 were non-passengers. A total of 19 non-passenger bodies were handed over, with 13 identified via DNA testing and 6 through facial recognition.
