Windmill to be installed atop DGVCL office in Surat under pilot project; Porbandar to be next city
June 23, 2025
Surat: In a significant step toward 24×7 green energy generation, a pilot project is being launched in two cities, Surat and Porbandar to generate electricity round the clock using wind energy, as solar energy can only be harnessed during the day. Under this initiative, a windmill will be installed on the rooftop of the Dakshin Gujarat Vij Company Ltd (DGVCL) corporate office in Kapodra, Surat. The installation is expected to be completed within the next 15 days.
A 3-kilowatt windmill, approximately 9 meters tall, is set to be installed on the rooftop of the South Gujarat Power Company’s Kapodra office. It is expected to generate 16 to 18 units of electricity daily. A similar installation will also take place in Porbandar.
Over a period of two years, detailed data will be collected on electricity generation patterns, including wind speed, day-night output, and overall efficiency. The Gujarat Power Research and Development Cell (GPRD) will monitor the performance of both windmills.
Officials stated that if the pilot proves successful, rooftop windmills may be offered to residential and commercial consumers. However, the cost of a windmill—estimated at ₹10 to ₹12 lakh—is currently higher than that of conventional solar panel systems. Unlike solar panels, windmills can continue to generate power even in cloudy or rainy conditions, offering a more consistent energy solution. DeshGujarat
