June 18, 2025
Ahmedabad: Viswashkumar Ramesh, the lone survivor of the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad, was discharged from the Civil Hospital on Tuesday evening and is heading home after the tragic incident.
Giving information about Viswashkumar’s release, Dr. Rakesh S. Joshi, Medical Superintendent of Civil Hospital, said, “Viswashkumar, the only survivor of the plane crash, has fully recovered. His family, who was present at the hospital, requested his discharge, and he was released from Ahmedabad Civil Hospital at 7:30 PM last night. His brother, who perished in the crash, was among the deceased whose bodies were handed over at 2 AM.”
Ramesh, a British citizen of Indian origin, was among the 242 passengers and crew on board the London-bound flight that crashed on June 12, shortly after takeoff. The aircraft struck the BJ Medical College hostel and canteen during the incident. Ramesh was seated in 11A near the emergency exit when the aircraft disintegrated. His seat detached during the crash and was flung away from the wreckage, allowing him to survive the resulting explosion. However, his brother did not survive the crash.
Giving further details, Dr. Joshi said that the DNA samples of 190 deceased victims have been matched. So far, a total of 157 bodies have been handed over to their families. “Five families will come to receive the bodies of their relatives soon. The hospital administration is in touch with 10 families, while 15 families are waiting for DNA matches of other relatives, and the process of identity verification for three families is ongoing,” he added.
He further mentioned that the 157 confirmed deceased include 123 Indian citizens, four Portuguese nationals, 27 British citizens, one Canadian, and four non-passengers.
Providing details of the bodies handed over, Dr. Joshi said that the bodies of the following were handed over to relatives: Udaipur – 6, Vadodara – 18, Kheda – 10, Ahmedabad – 48, Mehsana – 5, Botad – 1, Jodhpur – 1, Aravalli – 2, Anand – 11, Bharuch – 5, Surat – 6, Patan – 1, Gandhinagar – 6, Maharashtra – 2, Diu – 12, Junagadh – 1, Amreli – 1, Gir Somnath – 5, Mahisagar – 1, Bhavnagar – 1, London – 2, Patna – 1, Rajkot – 2, Mumbai – 7, Nadiad – 1, Dwarka – 2, and one from Sabarkantha.
He added that since the process of DNA sample matching is highly sensitive and involves legal procedures, it is being conducted with utmost seriousness and urgency. Forensic Science University and its associated institutions, local administration, the state government’s health department, and various agencies are working diligently to hand over the mortal remains to the bereaved families as quickly as possible.
