Larsen & Toubro to build green hydrogen, ammonia plants in Kandla, Gujarat

Kandla: Larsen & Toubro (L&T) on Tuesday announced that it has acquired land in Kandla, to set up green hydrogen and green ammonia production facilities. The move aligns with the government’s push for clean energy through initiatives like the National Green Hydrogen Mission and transport-related pilot projects.

Speaking at the company’s annual general meeting, Chairman and Managing Director S N Subrahmanyan highlighted L&T’s progress in clean energy, especially in green hydrogen and small modular reactors (SMRs). He said the company’s electrolyser manufacturing operations are already underway, giving L&T a competitive edge in the green hydrogen space.

A major milestone, he noted, was receiving regulatory approval from the U.S. Department of Energy to transfer SMR technology to India — making L&T one of only three eligible Indian firms. This marks a formal beginning of L&T’s SMR journey and positions it to spearhead the commercialisation of nuclear energy in India.

Subrahmanyan added that while L&T initially collaborates with global partners for both green hydrogen and SMRs, its long-term aim is to build proprietary technology, produce key components, and offer cost-efficient solutions tailored to emerging markets.

The company is also equipped to execute engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) projects in green hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol worldwide. Earlier, L&T had formed L&T Green Energy Kandla Pvt Ltd to lead its green hydrogen initiatives.

Green hydrogen is produced by electrolysing water using renewable energy, making it a clean and sustainable fuel source. DeshGujarat
