Increased Water Flow in Mahi Canals Brings Relief to Farmers Growing Summer Crops

Vallabh Vidyanagar: Farmers in Anand and Kheda districts cultivating summer crops like paddy, millet, and other varieties have received a significant boost as the irrigation department has increased the water flow in the Mahi canals. This move aims to address water scarcity issues in the region and cater to the agricultural and drinking water needs of the local population.

The Mahi canals, which draw water from the Panam and Kadana reservoirs via the Wanakbori Weir, supply water to various areas in Charotar, including parts of Saurashtra via pipelines, and to Ahmedabad district through the Rasca Weir on the Shedhi branch.

Initially, a water flow of 3500 cusecs was released into the canals. However, considering the farmers’ demands, the water levels in the reservoirs, and the overall water requirements, the irrigation department has decided to increase the flow.

Currently, the water level at the Wanakbori Weir has reached 219.75 feet. In response, the water flow in the Mahi canals has been increased by 450 cusecs, bringing the total flow to 3950 cusecs in the Nadiad branch, the main branch, and the Shedhi branch.

Additionally, to maintain the flow in the Mahi River and to operate the power house, 300 cusecs of water is being released into the river.

This increased water supply is expected to provide much-needed relief to farmers growing summer crops like paddy and millet, ensuring adequate irrigation for their fields. DeshGujarat
