Korean firm to supply air-filled rubber barrage for six-lane barrage-cum-bridge on Sabarmati

Ahmedabad: Ahmedabad: Under the Sabarmati Riverfront Project Phase-2, a six-lane barrage-cum-bridge is being constructed between Acher on the west bank and Camp Sadar Bazar on the east bank. The Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Limited (SRFDCL), responsible for carrying out the work, shared the latest update on the project, stating that M/s YOOIL Envirotech Private Limited, South Korea, has been selected for the manufacturing, supply, installation, commissioning, operation, and maintenance of the Air-Filled Rubber Type Barrage.

As per SRFDCL, the civil work for the six-lane bridge and barrage has been awarded to M/s Rajkamal Builders Infrastructure Pvt. Ltd. (Tender amount: ₹239.92 crore). At present, survey work, soil investigation, and site mobilization have been completed. The design of the bridge is under verification and approval by the Design Circle of the Road and Building Department, Government of Gujarat, Gandhinagar. The civil work design for the bridge and barrage has been approved, while the remaining structural design is under verification.

The work of filling the riverbed with soil at the site and constructing the R.C.C. diaphragm wall has commenced.

The contract for manufacturing, supply, installation, commissioning, operation, and maintenance of the Air-Filled Rubber Type Barrage, along with the necessary electro-mechanical automation system, has been awarded to M/s YOOIL Envirotech Private Limited, South Korea (Tender amount: ₹53.78 crore).

The SRFDCL also stated that the installation of the rubber membrane for the barrage will be carried out by the contractor after the completion of the barrage’s civil work, approximately after the monsoon of 2026.

The project is scheduled for completion by April 2027.

Features of the Barrage-Cum-Bridge

The six-lane bridge has a length of 1,048.08 meters. Approach bridges will be constructed from the riverfront road on both sides of the Sadar Bridge to the main bridge.

The main central span of the bridge will feature an iron arch of 126.00 meters, with 42.00 meters on both sides being of the suspended arch type, while the remaining span will consist of a pre-stressed box-type girder.

A 3-meter-wide footpath with tensile roofing is planned on the lower part of the deck of the main bridge. This footpath is designed to be lower than the road level, allowing citizens to view the river and riverfront without traffic obstruction.

The construction of a bridge connecting Torrent Power Station (BRTS Road) in the west to Camp Sadar Bazar (Airport Road) in the east will provide direct connectivity between western areas of the city, such as Chandkheda, Sabarmati, Motera, and Hansol, and the airport in the east, significantly easing traffic congestion.

The water stored upstream of the barrage will help Ahmedabad avoid water shortages. During the maintenance or repair of the Narmada Main Canal, approximately 10 to 15 days of water supply will be available for purification at Kotarpur Water Works to serve the city.

The water level will be maintained for the riverfront up to Gandhinagar, as water remains filled from Sadar Barrage to Sant Sarovar.

Since the operation and maintenance of the rubber barrage are based on an automatic control system, it will not obstruct the river’s flow when deflected. A 3.5-meter-high air-filled rubber barrage of a specialized type will be constructed, making it the first of its kind in Gujarat.

A provision for 10-meter-wide lock gates has been made on both sides of the river for theme-based decorative lighting and water transportation. DeshGujarat
