Modhera: The Uttarardh Mahotsav 2025 will be held on January 18 and 19 at the world-famous historic Modhera Surya Mandir. This town festival, which showcases unique architecture and classical dance, is celebrated in the ancient city of Modhera. This year’s Uttarardh festival will feature performances by world-renowned classical dance artists, including those specializing in Bharatanatyam, Odissi, Kuchipudi, Mohini Attam, Kathak, Kathakali, Manipuri, and Sattriya.

The festival takes place after the Uttarayan festival, during the northern ascent of the Sun, which occurs at the midpoint between the Sun’s entry into Sagittarius and Capricorn. At this time, winter comes to an end, and the days begin to lengthen. It is traditional to celebrate this ‘half’ phase as the Uttarardh festival, with classical dance performances at the Sun Temple.

The Sun Temple at Modhera is an excellent example of ancient engineering skills related to the positions of the Sun and planets, as well as the Sun’s orbit around the Earth. As a result, this festival is celebrated within the premises of the Sun Temple.

The festival aims to promote the grand guru-shishya tradition of Indian classical dance. Since 1992, the state government has organized the event as a joint initiative by the departments of sports, youth, and cultural activities, in collaboration with the district administration.
