Valsad: The installation of smart electricity meters began today in Vapi at the residence of Kanubhai Desai, Minister of Finance, Energy, and Petrochemicals. The installation drive was inaugurated with Kanubhai’s wife ceremonially marking the smart meter with a kumkum tilak for their home. Later, at the Vapi Industrial Association (VIA), the minister participated in the ‘Smart Meter, Smart Start’ program under the revamped distribution sector, where all information related to smart meters was shared.
The minister urged the public to install smart meters, dispelling misconceptions about the technology. He emphasized that the installation of smart meters is free of cost and contributes to national development. He reassured consumers that there is no need to fear smart meters, as they provide accurate daily electricity consumption data through a mobile application. The smart meters do not increase electricity bills but ensure precise consumption tracking, offering multiple benefits.
Further, the minister highlighted the Prime Minister’s vision of ‘One Nation, One Grid’ to ensure equitable power supply across the country. He also noted Gujarat’s establishment of the Climate Change Department, the first of its kind in Asia, aligning with the nation’s goal of achieving 50% renewable energy in the future.
The program featured a live demonstration of smart meters, covering their functionality, benefits, installation process, customer support, and addressing common misconceptions. The demo also showcased how the smart meter integrates with mobile applications to provide accurate and real-time consumption details.
VIA President Satish Patel, DGVCL Managing Director Yogesh Chaudhary, Jetco Managing Director Upendra Pandey, DGVCL officials, employees, and a large number of people were present at the program.
What is a smart meter?
A smart meter works in the same way as an existing electricity meter to record electricity consumption. Smart meters provide accurate electricity consumption information with greater clarity. Additionally, they feature two-way communication.
Smart Meter Installation Process
- Consumer Indexing – A designated representative from DGVCL will register meter details, customer details, latitude and longitude, meter box details, cable details, etc., in the application.
- Meter Installation – DGVCL employees will install smart meters in place of the existing meters for customers. Both old and new meters will be registered in the mobile application. After installation, the meter will be sealed, and a copy of the meter replacement proforma will be given to the customer.
