Surat: A businessman identified as Sanjay Dhoot (48) was killed in a tragic accident allegedly caused by an intoxicated driver, Dev Der (24), who has now been booked for drunk driving and endangering lives for the third time now.
The fatal incident occurred on the Ring Road flyover near Udhna crossroads, where Der, driving a luxury sedan, collided with Dhoot’s motorcycle, killing him instantly. Locals at the scene found a cold drink bottle, plastic cups, and other items in the car. Witnesses, who noted that Der smelled of alcohol, detained him until the police arrived.
Dhoot’s son, Aishwary has filed a complaint regarding the accident after which Der has been booked for reckless driving and causing death by negligence under IPC sections 281 and 106 (1), as well as Motor Vehicle Act sections 177, 184, and 185. His blood samples have been sent for alcohol testing, and further investigations, including speed analysis, will involve the RTO and other agencies.
Der has a history of reckless driving under the influence. In 2023, while allegedly intoxicated, he dragged a businessman on his car’s bonnet for 3 km in an incident that could have ended in tragedy. In 2022, Der attempted to set fire to a petrol pump in Piplod by dousing it with diesel but failed when he couldn’t find a matchbox or lighter. With this new case, Der now has five FIRs against him.
