IIM Ahmedabad student commits suicide in hostel room ahead of Management fest he was Coordinating

Ahmedabad: A student from Telangana committed suicide in a hostel room (dome-21, room-38) at the new campus of the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) on Thursday. A 24-year-old student, Akshith Bhukya, hanged himself using a nylon rope tied to a wooden ventilation grill, as the ceiling fans in IIMA hostels are suicide-proof. Akshit was a second-year student in the Master of Business Administration (MBA) program.

Akshith was one of the 25 students who would lead The Red Bricks Summit (TRBS) event, which was to be held on the IIMA campus from today. In fact Akshit was the coordinator of this event scheduled to take place during 27th September to 29th September this year. The event website describes it as the Mecca of Management fests in India. Adani group’s Gautam Adani was to speak as key-note speaker in this event. IIMA has in latest canceled its Red Bricks Summit and announced – “We regret to inform you that, due to unforeseen circumstances, the entire TRBS 2024 event has been called off. We understand that this decision may cause inconvenience and disappointment, and we sincerely apologize for any disruption this may create in your plans.”

According to the police, no suicide note was found in the room, but the mobile phone and laptop were sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory for investigation. Deputy Police Commissioner (DCP) Shivam Varma said Akshith’s colleagues said that he was stressed about the Red Bricks Summit event.  Akshith was found dead on Thursday after students broke open the door to his hostel room.
