Over 1.4 lakh cusecs of water discharge from Ukai Dam; downstream villages on alert

Tapi: The outflow from the Ukai, the second largest dam in Gujarat, has increased today after noon as the inflow rose to 1.8 lakh cusecs at 12 noon. As of 5 PM today, the outflow from Ukai is over 1.4 lakh cusecs into the river and a routine 600 cusecs into the canal, with 12 gates of the dam open by 1.83 meters. The dam is 79.96% full, with a water level of 102.51 meters against the rule level of 105.16 meters (to be reached on or before October 1). However, compared to 10 AM this morning, the outflow was only 16,518 cusecs against an inflow of 80,000 cusecs. The outflow increased around 12 noon after 8 gates of the dam were opened by 1.52 meters as the inflow exceeded 1.8 lakh cusecs.

Given the red alert for heavy rains and the discharge of water from Ukai, which is the largest dam in south Gujarat, the administration has alerted the villages along the banks of the Tapi River. Residents of Miyapur, Budheshwar, Sehekpur, and adjoining villages have been notified as the water level of the Tapi River is rising.

Meanwhile, the Sardar Sarovar Narmada Dam, the largest dam in Gujarat, is also discharging 1.4 lakh cusecs against an inflow of 1.5 lakh cusecs of water. As per the 5 PM data, the dam is 86.54% full at 134.60 meters against the full reservoir level of 138.68 meters. Ten gates of the dam are open by 1.8 meters to discharge water downstream.
