DoT blocks over 6 lakh SIMs and 10,296 mobiles in Gujarat

Gandhinagar: Acting against the rising cybercrime, the Department of Telecommunication (DoT) in a significant move by blocked 10,296 mobile phones and 6.76 lakh SIM cards in state of Gujarat. Nationally, 1.92 crore SIM cards and 2.2 lakh mobiles with specific IMEI numbers have been blocked.
According to reports, India’s total telecom subscriber base was 119.7 crore as of February 2024.
The DoT targeted SIM cards obtained through fraudulent means, bulk registration of SIM cards under a single name and photo, issuance of multiple SIM cards to the same person, and individuals involved in criminal activities flagged by central investigative agencies.
Additionally, the government blocked SMS headers used by cybercriminals to send fraudulent messages. Across India, 32,000 such SMS headers were blocked, including 573 in Gujarat. Among these, 423 were associated with fake instant loan messages and 150 with gambling-related messages. DeshGujarat
