Canopy collapses at Rajkot airport terminal amid heavy rains

Rajkot: Canopy collapsed at the pasenger pickup and drop area outside the Hirasar based Rajkot airport’s departure terminal amid heavy rains, reports the Press Trust of India(PTI). The airport is being operated by the Airport Authority of India(AAI). The current building is a temporary terminal in operation since last year when the airport was inaugurated. The permenent terminal building is expected to be ready by August this year. The incident once again raises questions about structural safety related compromises while focusing on structural beauty. Yesterday a cab driver died at Delhi airport after the drop area overhead structure collapsed. Another incident happened at Jabalpur airport.

In a series of tweets, Rajkot Airport said, “At around 11:40 AM, it was observed that water was accumulating in the canopy of the city-side area of the terminal building. Upon noticing this, the information was immediately given to the civil section, and the area was cordoned off.”

“At around 11:55 AM, due to the heavy rain, more water collected, causing the canopy fabric to tear and fall down.
No casualties occurred during the incident. The civil team at the airport is currently removing the damaged canopy,” the tweet added. DeshGujarat
