Agri land converted overnight into N/A before acquisition for highway; probe underway
June 13, 2024
Amreli: A probe is underway regarding allegations of irregularities in the land acquisition process for the Mahuva-Jetpur National Highway in Amreli district. The land designated for the highway was allegedly converted from agricultural to non-agricultural status overnight. It could have resulted in financial losses for the Gujarat state government.
Allegations suggest collusion between landowners and unidentified individuals to reclassify agricultural land as non-agricultural just before the government’s land acquisition notification. This reclassification aims to secure higher compensation rates, which are typically more favourable for non-agricultural plots.
The General Administration Department has begun gathering evidence, requesting documents from the secretariat to substantiate claims of fraudulent land conversions. The Amreli Collector has confirmed the land conversion but insists it was done legally. An investigation is still going on and further action will likely be taken in the coming days. DeshGujarat
