Boating suspended at Kankariya; Sabarmati river cruise operations also halted

Ahmedabad: The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has issued an order to suspend all boating and other water sports activities at Kankariya Lake in the city. The civic body has also temporarily halted the operation of the River Cruise at the Sabarmati Riverfront. These activities will remain suspended until a new contract, encompassing safety measures proposed by the high court, is finalized.

The office of the city police commissioner requested the AMC to furnish details of the new contract, incorporating enhanced safety measures, to boating operators. The letter stipulated an immediate cessation of boating activities in the lakes if the contracts remain unsigned. Subsequently, the Kankaria Lakefront office sent a letter to Khodal Corporation, urging the temporary halt of boating and other water sports activities at the lake.

These actions are in response to ongoing proceedings of a PIL in the Gujarat High Court, initiated after a tragic boat incident at Harni Lake in Vadodara. The next hearing is scheduled for today, and the government is required to submit an action taken report regarding the matter.

Additionally, it is worth noting that on April 20th, the state home department directed the collectorates of Ahmedabad, Kheda, Dang, Devbhumi Dwarka, Sabarkantha, Mehsana, Bharuch, Narmada, Surat, and Bhavnagar to inspect all 18 sites where boating activities are ongoing. In case of any deficiencies, they were instructed to suspend the activities and provide a detailed report to the home department. DeshGujarat
