Gandhinagar: Headquarters of Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd (GUVNL), the power distribution arm of Gujarat government is likely to be shifted to GIFT city in Gandhinagar from its existing location in Vadodara. GUVNL’s arm Gujarat Energy Transmission Corporation (GETCO) has floated a tender for leased space of 45,000 square ft in GIFT City. The decision has been taken as the officials of GUVNL need to travel to Gandhinagar frequently from Vadodara for meetings with the State Energy department.
GUVNL, earlier Gujarat Electricity Board (GEB) has its headquarters in Vadodara since 1960 when Gujarat became a sperate State. The location was chosen as it was closer to power stations like Vanakbori, Dhuvaran and Ukai. After reform in 2005, GEB was replaced with GUVNL and transmission company GETCO, generation company GSEC, distribution companies MGVCL, DGVCL, PGVCL and UGVCL were formed.
With shifting of GUVNL to GIFT City, Vadodara will be left with the headquarters of MGVCL which is responsible for power supply to Central Gujarat. It is believed that GETCO and GSEC offices will also be shifted to GIFT City. It’s worth noting that in the past, Gujarat Energy Development Agency and Gujarat Secondary Education Board’s headquarters were also in Vadodara. They were later shifted to Gandhinagar. DeshGujarat
