Ahmedabad: The National Institute of Design (NID) in Paldi, has failed to secure a permanent lease for the adjacent plot of land on the Sabarmati riverfront. The Gujarat government rejected NID’s proposal for the same.

The plot, measuring 5,632 square meters, is owned by the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Limited (SRFDCL), which is a joint venture between the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and the state government. The land is designated as open space according to the town planning scheme.

For the past three years, NID has been paying monthly rent for this plot and had requested a 99-year lease. The AMC forwarded NID’s request to the state government, which then asked NID to comply with the terms of the Land Disposable Policy. This would require NID to pay the market value for the land. However, NID did not respond to the government’s offer or raise any concerns.
