Surat: The weavers of Surat have decided to appeal to the union ministers in Delhi about the ban imposed on the sale of polyester Mekhela Sari in Assam.
The Federation of Gujarat Weavers Welfare Association called a meeting of weavers on Monday to discuss the damage to the textile industry of Surat due to the ban on the sale of polyester Mekhela Sari in Assam. The weavers stated that there is a total stock of Rs. 500 crore, including weavers having stock of Rs. 150 crore, merchants having stock of Rs. 150 crore, and stock in process. There will be a significant demand for Mekhela Sari during the Bihu festival, but the demand will decrease after 15 days following the end of the festival. Thus, it is likely to affect the trade of Rs. 500 crore, they said. DeshGujarat
