GPCB issues closure notice to Anupam Rasayan’s Surat unit after deaths of 5 laborers

Surat: Following the death of five laborers in a blast in the unit Anupam Rasayan in Sachin GIDC. Gujarat Pollution control board has issued a closure notice to Anupam Rasayan after National Green Tribunal’s (NGT) suo-motu proceedings. GBCB has also imposed ₹ 1 crore as interim environmental damage compensation (EDC).
The GPCB in its report concerning the proceedings by the NGT principal bench on Sept 21 said that it has issued closure direction to the unit under provisions of the Air Act, 1981. The body has also imposed ₹ 1 crore fine on Anupam Rasayan that was paid by the firm on Sept 17.
The report also states that the Power and Water supply of the unit were cut on Sept 19 and Sept 17 respectively by Sachin GIDC.
A blast in the factory of Anupam Rasayan on 10th Sept had left 5 dead and 20 injured. Out of these 20, 3 are still in hospital undergoing treatment. According to the Police, the structure of the blast site is ‘too risky’ for forensics investigation, so they have filed a case of accidental death.
