Gandhinagar: The prices of Petrol and Diesel are less in Gujarat than the neighboring states due to difference in VAT (Value Added Tax) rates.
The price of Petrol is Rs 121 per litre and diesel is Rs 103 per litre in Maharashtra.
On the other hand, just across the border the price of petrol in Valsad, Gujarat is Rs 106 per litre and diesel is Rs 100 per litre.
The price of petrol in Dahod is Rs 106 per liter and diesel is Rs 100 per liter. Petrol and diesel prices just across the border in neighboring Madhya Pradesh are Rs 119 per litre and Rs 102 per liter respectively.
At Arvalli- Shamlaji near Rajasthan-Gujarat border in north Gujarat, the petrol and diesel prices are Rs 106 per liter and Rs 100 per liter, respectively. Whereas, the price of petrol is Rs 118 and diesel is Rs 101 in Rajasthan. Many people from neighboring states come to Gujarat for petrol and diesel due to lower prices. Many petrol pumps at Aravalli-Shamlaji near Rajasthan-Gujarat border have set-up hoardings with ‘Petrol-Diesel Cheaper than Rajasthan’.
VAT is decided by respective State governments. The Central government had reduced excise levied on petrol and diesel last year and also appealed State governments to do same in case of VAT. While BJP ruled state governments had reduced VAT, most of the opposition ruled states had continued to levy higher VAT. DeshGujarat
