ACB nabs UGVCL deputy engineer, middleman for taking Rs. 40,000 bribe

Gandhinagar: Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) here today arrested two accused including a Deputy Engineer in Uttar Gujarat Vij Company Ltd (UGVCL) for taking Rs. 40,000 bribe.
A complainant had started biscuit making business near his home and he attempted to steal power from UGVCL line using own cable. During the inspection drive on July 15 by UGVCL Bavla, the UGVCL staffers seized a cable that was suspected to be used for power theft.
Complainant was asked to visit the office and pay fine. Accused Mohammad Zubeir Mohammad Iqbal Sheikh, Deputy Engineer of UGVCL in Bavla demanded Rs. 1.80 lakh bribe for settlement of otherwise Rs. 3.5 lakh applicable fine.Deal was finalized for Rs. 1.20 lakh bribe which was to be paid to middleman Tariq alias Kakubhai. First installment of Rs. 40,000 amount was to be paid on July 16. As complainant contacted ACB, a trap was arranged today and both accused, a government staffer and a middleman were arrested by ACB PI SM Patni under supervision of ACB Ahmedabad unit officer KB Chudasama.
