Meeting of Surat Diamond Association with centre
March 10, 2015
Surat
A delegation of Surat Diamond Association(SDA) is visiting Delhi today to meet union minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
SDA delegation wants ‘special notified zone’ status for Gems and Jewelry park of Gujarat Hira Bourse so that diamond industry here can directly import rough. This will save diamond industry from paying premium to middle man. This status will make possible arrival of big global companies which may ultimately provide opportunity of auction of diamonds. In future when Surat Diamond Bourse project is realized, special notified zone could be shifted to that place. Special Notified Zone may also give benefit to small diamond manufactures in Surat. The delegation also wants central government to resume benefits given to Ichchapor based Gems and Jewelery park. Centre had given SEZ status to this park in year 2004, but it was snatched away due to delay in execution of 350 proposed units. At present there are 5 companies functioning here, 5 more are likely to start work soon while 20 companies has demanded land.
