It’s not over and the picture is not clear yet, I’m not eager to take charge, it’s not suitable till the time controversy is alive: RA Mehta

Ahmedabad, 18 January 2012
Retired Justice RA Mehta was appointed Lokayukta of Gujarat in August 2011, however Gujarat govt opposed the procedure of appointment and challenged Governor’s decision in Gujarat High Court. Amid this controversy, Justice RA Mehta stayed away from taking oath as Lokayukta and remained silent most of the time. He even didn’t reply the notice of Gujarat High Court that was served to him in connection with this case. Today when Gujarat High Court’s third judge okayed Mehta’s appointment as Lokayukta, Etv Gujarati had brief talk with him. Following is English translation of that video talk.
Etv:After that court battle, and today’s third judge verdict positive for you, we are now wanting to know when you are going to take charge of your post?
RA Mehta:It’s not over yet. Third judge’s verdict will go to division bench. Division bench will give final verdict. And it is said that the state govt is also going to SC. Thus the picture is not clear yet.
Etv:If final verdict is positive, what you will do?
RA Mehta:It’s too early to say anything on this.
Etv:Are you eager to take charge as Lokayukta?
RA Mehta:I am not eager at all.
Etv: You have been silent after your appointment. What you have to say about that?
RA Mehta:I have nothing to say on this subject. I had not wished for my appointment as Lokayukta. I don’t care for what the court decides. I have been totally indifferent, and I am indifferent even today.
Etv:Do you think the post of Lokayukta is important, and the post should not be vacant?
RA Mehta:There is no doubt on its importance, but a person who is appointed should have credibility. Till the time controversy is alive, I don’t find it suitable to..(take charge of the post)
Etv:The state government has continuously opposed your appointment. Are you hurt?
RA Mehta:No I am unaffected, I don’t feel hurt.
